I second JCL. I had a 2006 X3 M-Sport loaner a couple weeks ago. It had the M/// badge on the steering wheel and on the door sills. I didn't remember seeing any on the wheels, though, and definitely not on the hatch door. I thought both items were tastefully done, and I loved the Nappa leather on the M-Sport steering wheel.

Yes, hit the nail on the head. I have no problem with M-sport variants or otherwise, but a standard X3 in New Jersey with a roof rack and an ///M emblem stuck on the back does not an ///M model make, nor in this case is it even an M-sport version. To each his own of course

Are you sure the ///M logo isn't on the back of some? I noticed my neighbors has it as well as somebody I work with (I don't know who, just see the sav in the parking lot). I also passed by a dealer (Center BMW in Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks) and noticed 2 there. I'm not sure BMW put it on, maybe the dealer is just doing it, or like others have said, the owners just like put it on themselves. In any event, to each there own, personally I don't have a problem with it.

Lots of people that buy a BMW with an m sport pack put an ///M badge on the back.
