cv boot replace progress

you need to become THOR here...

grab your hammer and a 3/8" 6" extension. use the small part of the extension as a chisel and put that on the flat star part in the cv joint.. start hammering away till the flat star part slides over the c clip.

lol.. remember, there's ALOT of hammering to be done!

btw.. get a 2x4x24 board ready for hammering everything back together!

Maybe I'm not grasping this concept but if I do that how do I access the clip? I mean, for one the joint don't move for sh^#, and secondly the joint is totally over the clip.

Ecko, the joint will come off the shaft. Use a bigger hammer. Small hammer you hit long time, big Fking hammer you hit little time. The C-clip is sandwich between the shaft and the joint. Once the joint comes off you will see the C-clip on the shaft. Once you take the CV joint apart for cleaning make sure which end face out and which face in, I believe the cage has a big end and small end. Good luck.

no my dustshield bowl right behind the hub is just disconnected from the larger dustshield. i could tack weld it back in place but when the lugs are bolted in, the dustshield bowl doesn't move.

i was going to just use a dremel and cut the bowl off if it did make noise and forget about using the dustshield bowl behind the hub.

lol.. abarth is right on the money here! big f'ing hammer is your friend.

also, yes there is a big end and small end to the cv joint bearings itself, small end facing the wheel, big end facing the drive shaft... however, i guess i was lucky... i didn't need to take my cv joint out of the stub joint at all since my damage was detected early and i didn't get any dirt into the grease. i just spooned out the old grease and use a lint free shop towel to wipe 95% of the old grease out.

from those 2 pics, you can see that the cv joint has to slide about 1 inch before the c-clip is exposed and loose... then you got about another 1/2" of travel before the joint is off the shaft. you have to hammer the cv joint off.. can't just pull it off with your hands...
