I have done similar operation with my first E53 (I do not know technological tricks, it was made by painting specialist), see picture. First time it was O.K., I sold this car after some 6 months. I saw this car couple months ago, looks terrible! Painting on vent rest black holes, resistance of painting on the plastic like this is not so good. I hope in your case it will be O.K. (or you will sell this car before). Better is replace with genuine parts from BMW (as I have done to my second E53 (nachtblau, individual).

Has the paint chipped or come off since painting the grill because of heat from the engine or weather ?

Me too. I would go for BMW or other reputable company replacement instead.

Risky~! I like to use fine grit 3M sponge paper prior to paint on plastic parts.
