I don't know you guys...my stealer told me he had a 03 X5 4.6is on his lot listed for 45k. It had about 29k miles on it... plus it sat on his lot for 103 days and didn't move. He claims he had to let it go for $38,000. I think that is a huge hit and find that hard to believe. This guy is usually a straight shooter with me, considering that I have purchased (2) X5's and a ///M3 from this dealership. You guys make a good point regarding all models drop when the body style changes...but if his figures are correct, this is worse than the E39 drop IMO.............Phil

As a recent buyer of a X5 4.6is I know the market quite well after searching nationally for vehicles for 3 solid weeks. The market on 02's is from $33,000 for 50k mile cars up to $40,000 for 30k mile cars. The market on 03's is from $35,000 to $43,000 for the same mileage figures.

I bought my 02 4.6is for $33,500. It is silver, 53k miles, nav, new tires, mint condition.

I do not understand why sellers ask for the high $40's when there are so many really nice 4.6is's out there for sale well below their offering price. I had Vista Motors a BMW dealer here in south Florida offer me a blue 03 4.6 w 40k miles for $48,000!! Geee what a deal!

The pressure on the price is a combination of factors including gas prices, the 02's and 03's are all hitting the 40k - 50k mile range and becoming less desirable to their original owners and the leases on these vehicles are all coming up.

I found www.Cars.com and www.Autotrader.com to be good resources. A good used dealer is www.LuxuryMotors.com more than a few X5's at reasonable prices. THey were offering free shipping a few weeks back.

...This is quite different from experience with the E38-E65 and E39-E60 changeover. In both of these cases, continuing to date, the old bodystyle have continued to drop in value significantly. A late production example of the E38 or E39 has taken a huge hit in resale in the past few years. I'm predicting that this will not happen on the E53, at least not in a major way.
Good info, Sarafil. Thanks for the insight!

I experienced the E39 drop first-hand, when I sold my '00 M5 this past December. The E38 story was just a little bit different, however, as at least during the initial MY02 period the E38s were showing a 2-3K increase at auction. Once the E65 shock and awe factor wore off, I know the E38s showed a more typical changeover decline.

The experience with the 2002 745i was a very unique one... the reaction from the marketplace was a bit mixed, and as a result the initial decline in E38 values was slightly delayed. But rest assured, the value did drop and it did drop hard. I remember one year buying a bunch of 2001 740iL's and paying all the money for them. I also remember over the next year some of those clients coming back with those cars looking to change into something else, and that they had lost abnormally huge amounts of money because the value of that car had dropped by a huge amount within months. To this day, the wholesale value on an average 2002 745Li starts with a "3" and the wholesale value on an average 2001 740iL starts with a "1". That's a big gap...

Wow, Great Info

I am in the process of looking for a used 4.8 for around $50g's. I am moving from a 4.4 with sport and navi. I have found a 2005 4.8 with 11k miles, and navi for about 52g's I don't know if the value will hold up. Hmm what to do??????

I picked up my 2003 X5 3.0 CPO with 22k for $32k out the door from the dealer 2 weeks ago. So I think values are pretty good. Dropping maybe and my dealer couldn't get the 4.4s out the door it seems. Me I wasn't interested in the V8 for the cost of maintence on the engine and the gas consumption...as for speed. I got a Dinan HP upgrade and A/T Software upgrade for 1/2 price each so that suits me just plenty.

Now with the new E70 price released, anyone can comment the current E53's value drop? I am asking this because I am in the market for a 2004 or newer E54 4.4. but I saw saw the E70's 4.8 price, I am thinking maybe I should wait a bit longer or just get a brand new RX350 instead. (currently, a loaded 2004 X5 price almost identical to a loaded brand New RX350 price)
