pit bike tow rack ?

anybody got a motorbike rack for their X5 ?

Like one of these ?

http://www.davecooper.co.uk/bike_racks.htm

http://www.autowbars.co.uk/motorcyclerack.htm

I talked to the company and it's not compatible with the swan neck detatchable tow bar that comes with the X5, but he says it can be modified to fit by basically welding it to the swan neck, etc.

just wondered if anyone had done it already ?

It's for mounting my wee pit bike (like the green one on the autowbars site) on the back rather than having a crappy trailer.

I'm figuring I could cut/weld the swan neck bit onto the tow rack, and then just attach/detach the whole thing from the X5 ??

I not familar with the swan neck that you mentioned, but I have and use this bike carrier for my Yamaha R1...

http://www.mototote.com/

It attaches directly into the OEM hitch receiver and supports the weight of the rack and the 387+ lbs weight of the bike with no problems.

I've hauled my bikes from MD to NC and back many times with no problems.

that looks good.

maybe I've got the wrong name, the standard OEM detatchable towbar for the X5. They are called swan necks in the UK because of the S type shape of the bit with the ball on it.

then again, it costs a fortune and it's USA based :-(

400lbs of weight though ? mental ! that means I could put my fireblade on the back... how does it drive with 400lbs of bike hanging off the back of it ? must be a bit nervous surely ?

Not at all. With the air suspension the ride it still soft and cushiony and the truck doesn't sag is the back. I'm on the highway doing 80-90 miles per hours.

I'm still confused about the what type of hitch reciever you have. The one on my X is a 2" square hole for inserting tongue/ball. Do you have a picture?

Here's a picture (using an X3 as an example) of a swan-neck towbar. It's a little different in design and attachment than our standard system here in the States. I think it's a British/European thing ...

Powerlord,

maybe something like this would allow you to adapt one of your aforementioned racks to your swan neck. Just a thought ...

Oh Wow! I was totally unfamilar with the UK setup (Swan Neck). The rack I referred you to definitely will not work with that configuration. Sorry to have mislead.
