Just thought I'd share...

I just thought that I'd share that Rain Sensors SUCK in snow. I don't know if they just measure the area where the sensor is, or if it's the whole windshield, but they don't work well. The salt spray dries on the windshield and so the wipers start going fast... Also, the snow sprays up from the hood right into my line of vision, but the sensor doesn't wipe it away.... I wish the BMWs had a button to de-activate the rain sensor. My friend's XC90 has that.

There is a way to turn the rain sensor off and have only intermittent wipers--but I don't remember how. It should be in the manual. That said, it's not as easy as pressing a button. Not something you'd want to do daily.

I know you can have it de-activated at the dealer, but that's kind of dumb since it's one of my favorite and certainly one of the most practical features of the car. I go through lots of washer fluid though, since I have to spray the salt off every 10 minutes or so.

Perhaps it more of an issue with the 3er, as I haven't experienced this on my X5, and I've done a good bit of driving in various winter conditions over the years.

Yeah.. they're plotting with the NHDOT... They shouldn't salt the roads. It creates slush which I find more slippery than snow.

I noticed it in the X5, too, but more in the 330.. I think it's because the 3er is lower to the ground, therefore more in the spray. That's one thing I really HATE about being down low... You get caught in the spray when the road is wet. It sucks.

The couple times a year we get white stuff, they usually put down sand...that can be worse than salt for the paint...

They put down a mix of sand and salt here. I hate it. Especially being stuck behind a sand truck! One sprayed me today (we're getting a huge-(butt) storm here)... My car has a bunch of chips on the hood from rocks from those beastly trucks. Of course, I live on a dirt road so I get rock damage and the car gets sand in everything...

I personally find that the rain sensor feature is one of the most practical features on the car. It is true that snow, or fine mist confuses the sensor, but then just turn it down to the lowest sensitivity level, and it will work as it should again.

I think that my old 330i wiped more...perhaps because the windshield got "splashed" more times when going through large puddles?
