Newbie, the good and the bad

Hello. My wife and I are proud new owners of a 2000 X5 4.4. It looks like new and drives like a dream. That is except when coming to a stop from about 30+mph with everything up to normal operating temp, the tranny downshifts quite abruptly and sometimes causes the engine to stall!
I find it hard to believe that this beautiful running engine and seamless shifting tranny conspire to do such a nasty deed, especially when downshifting is so transparent in less fancy automatics. I have seen mention of these 2 anomolies on this forum - abrupt downshifting, stalling coming to a stop - but can't say for sure that any positive fixes were identified in followups. Has anyone experienced both of these and had it fixed? I'm taking it in for service tomorrow and hope to get 'er done for good, but still would like to confirm with the forum what's been the trick for others.

We have 19"s and the stock Turanzas. I was a little worried last week during our snowstorm, but was impressed with the Xs capabilites. I did get a little sideways going down an icy slope, then remembered the magic button. Hill Descent Control is worth its weight in gold!

This is a good website. Thanks.

- Glenn

You may want to have your dealer reinitialize/update the tranny with more current software. That is a known issue in some X5's.

Again, welcome!

first, welcome! this is the place to get your questions answered. second, like every used vehicle out there, you'd better have some extra $ for repairs. I bought my '01 used about 18 months ago. there are 2 hoses(~30mm dia) in the back of the engine that will most likely need replacing if they feel thin and flexible. the water pump gives up between 60K-80K. What service has been done so far on your X? did it come with new rubber(tires)? I assume the battery has been replaced, otherwise it's 6+yrs old, and it's winter time. Make sure the 60K inspection checks out that everything shuts down properly when the ignition is turned off. (my a/c fan kept drawing juice) the final stage resistor is a very typical problem on the X5. Also make sure they check that all the updates have been installed.

I know I've run on on what may happen, but I'm a firm believer that it's cheaper to fix in the garage than out on the road. I love my '01 X5 so much that when I needed a 2nd car, I bought a new '06 X5, I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.
