The change in sound is pretty subtle. The only time you really notice it is from the OUTSIDE when the engine's cold. I sounds a little mechanical; but once ithe engine/exhaust is warmed up, the sound is just a little deeper. My wifes only noticed it after I mentioned it to her. It's not a huge difference.

I just had straight pipes installed on my 2001 4.4 today.

I agree that the change is sound is pretty subtle, but that is exactly what I was looking for. The sound is a little louder and just a little deeper.

X-pipe or straight…neither is going to boost HP or torque.

BMW exhausts are very well designed and the aftermarket exhausts mainly change the sound and look.

Sadly, gone are the days (like on my old 1980 Scirocco) when an exhaust manifold, high flow cat and good aftermarket system was good for a 15% increase in HP

I suspect most of the noise comes from the engine, but not from the pipe. May be you should remove the the muffler instead of the resonator.

One time, I got hit from the back of my Civic and muffler was dangled, sound was great after I removed it. It was too damn noise for me, I couldn't hear my own music from my own the car. It was fun drive around for couple days like that though.

I have the Eisenmann race exhaust on mine, which I love, and am curious how the sound compares. If it's similar, it's definitely a much cheaper route. Are you in LA?
