Help! BMW Reversing camera installation problems
I have just bought the genuine BMW kit complete with installation instructions. Wonderful, I thought! BMW are finally getting the message that not all of their customers want to pay nearly £600 for the pleasure of getting a few extra scratches while in their workshops for a job they could do themselves. And detailed instructions from them to help!
Didn't take long to discover my mistake! Camera installation doesn't mention need to file off lug on boot handle to make camera fit new hole - and I very nearly decided camera should be nearer to end of handle to leave more integrity to remainder of handle, but fortunately chickened out and cut out as advised. Even so it isn't an elegant engineering solution that I would have expected from BMW. Wiring loom installation not easy, but accomplished in about 4 hours. However, end of loom connection seems impossible. Location shown in the manual for X5 with TV,Satnav (with SA601/602) showing X18804 and X18806 no can see(picture). Removed the whole assembly - still cannot identify where the wires connect. Plug X18806 is "natural" colour - if that means skin there is none there. Also cannot see where to connect the green wire to - cannot find the cable grommet. Reversing light signal is supposed to be on it. Also, can anyone tell me what the wire colours are in English ie WS, SW/BR, RT, BR and GE? Help please anyone. Cannot ask local BMW dealers as none have done this yet!! UPDATE 2 Jan 07 Job now completed and successful. Video unit is the black box to the right of the picture, behind/underneath the wiring loom, which is mostly in shadow. The connectors I couldn't find are on the right hand end of this unit partly obscured by the wiring loom. If you take out the whole assembly and turn it over as far as the loom will allow the blue and white connectors are exposed. (The answer to the "natural colour" question above is white - a racist statement by BMW?? ) For anyone considering doing it you need to know that the reversing light signal is the WS/GE cable which means white cable with yellow stripe (WeiS/GElb) and is the cable that passes out of the boot into the lower tailgate through a rubber grommet. SW/BR cable is a brown cable with white stripe (SWarze/BRun) and RT cable is red (RoT). Also to get the cable to pass through the boot lid grommet into the car unwind the insertion tool supplied fitted to the end of the cable and throw away the packing round the cable and retape it - as supplied it is too fat to pass easily through the grommet. Camera view is fine showing top edge of bumper and extending yards behind the car, but unfortunately cannot see the towing hitch, which is what I really wanted to allow hook up of caravan single handed. Correction - can see about half of towing ball top - didn't notice it on the screen until I fitted a grease cover with a piece of curtain wire screwed into the top. Now I know where to look and just the top half of the ball is visible, so should be OK for connecting the caravan drawbar. Last edited by peterd; 01-08-2007 at 02:31 PM. |
