The issues I had, some have been answered from just reading...such as: 1) reseting the service/inspection lights-DONE (found here) 2) rear tailight issue-DONE (found here) 3) tires- do you recommend any? michelin vs. goodyear? 4) inspection- what's the best/cost effective approach I can take here. I don't have much mechanical knowledge and BMW is expensive. (Note: my extended warranty won't cover the inspections) 5) oil service light (yellow)- I believe it may just be that I need to put more oil in it, however, i knwo this is stupid (please forgive) but I can't locate the dipstick, I've looked and can't find. I will try again tomorrow. AGAIN THANK YOU SOOO MUCH, THIS WEBSITE ROCKS! |

:xoutpost:![]() I personally like michelins..only because i have them heard of better ones, but depends what kind of wheels you haveServicing your car will cost a lot of money. You can opt for the extented maintenance program...the cost will pay itself off. The dipstick is right next to the engine...keep looking ![]() ![]() And yes...this website does ROCK

The extended maintenance program is the same one that came originally with the car but extented to 6yrs/100000miles from original ownership date. The price floats somewhere between $1000-$1700

We'll i tried that route, see the x5 was my FIRST CAR i purchased on my own after college, but i purchased from carmax. (note: don't think i'll be doing that again.)
We'll I got an extended warranty through them, I bought it with 27000 miles on it and now I have about 70000 and I bought it back in '05. I'm concerned that the extended warrantly may expire at 75k, I need to verify that though. SO because i wasn't as knowledgeable on how BMW works with warrantlys, if I would have known I would have driven to the BMW dealership and just bought a warranty from them. However since i'm over the 50K mileage they told me I can't purchase one from them.... hence my dilemma. Also, i have Silverstar bulbs in my headlights, but they burn out about every 3 months. Any reasons why? Help!?! |

There's plenty of good tires out there. Your tire selection is dependent on your wheel setup (17", 18", 19", 20", 22"), the type of driving you do, typical roadway conditions, and of course, your budget. Many of the forum members here run performance tires in the summer and all season/winter tires in the winter. The popular tires on this forum are the OEM Michelin Diamaris, Michelin MVX Energy, Michelin Latitude, Toyo Proxies ST, and Yokohama Advans. Do a search on tires and read the various postings regarding all tires. Go to the dealer and obtain a service history for your vehicle if you don't have it already. All they need is your VIN to determine what servicing was performed by BMW. This will give you an idea of where you're at with maintenance requirements. If it shows the Inspection 2 was done recently, you should be in fairly good shape. If not, you should have it done, either by a dealer or by the best independent BMW mechanic that you can find. Perhaps some of the Houston based X5world members can provide you a referral; if not, contact the local chapter of the BMWCCA for a list of reputable mechanics. You'll realize a substantial savings by having your inspection done by an independent mechanic as opposed to having the work done by a dealer. The yellow light indicates that you are due for a service. Even if you top your oil level, the yellow indicator will remain lit; it has to be reset electronically when your next service is performed. It is still a good idea to top your oil levels always, don't let it fall below the dipstick mark. Make sure you're using an approved synthetic oil. In regards to your headlight bulbs, Sylvania Silverstars are known to have short life spans. Here's an article that clarifies the issue (see last paragraph): http://www.danielsternlighting.com/t...good/good.html |
