why not get one that plays mp3s? They can be had for almost the same price

CD-R is simply recorderable CD media (burnable CDs). MP3 is a compress file format. Not the same.

I thought you'll also need a converter box (like soundgate or blitzsafe) to work with a branded Alpine unit? There's no mention of this from the seller. From the picture, if you look closely, it looks like the connectors (cable) are hacked to work with the BMW I-Bus. Thus, don't know the sound quality can be guarantee.

I agree with Aimster, that for almost the same price, you can get one that also plays MP3s.

This one is just the standard BMW branded model. It still didn't state whether it will play MP3s.
