It is important to think about the effect on the transmission. Use the manual feature to hold a gear, preventing hunting on a climb. Also, think about whether the transmission torque converter is in lockup or not (it feels like a shift, in a way, and you can determine what speeds it locks up at with careful attention). In lockup mode, there is no additional heat being generated.

I think that also in manual mode the transmission can have a sort of "hunting the gear". The torque converter it's locks up only at high rpm, the same of a normal drive position. Can you confirm me this?

I'd like to see some pics posted of guys with big loads hooked up to their X5's!! There always seem to be lots of doubters about the X5's towing capablity everytime the subject comes up, so pics would be cool.

I am sure the X5 4.4 will tow 6000 or 7000 lbs it's a power house. Trailering that load over time can't be good on a performance oriented SAV. I have a number trucks and trailers and haul 6000 and 10,000 lb loads regularly. The first time you have to stop an X5 with 6000 lbs of trailer on a turn in and intersection because some dumb A*% stops short it will test everything.

Don't forget the BMW requirement for trailer brakes for any load over 1800 lbs.

Hi all,
One of my first posts here... Glad to be part of this board.
We've had our X5 4.4 for 3 months now. I absolutely love this car!
With my racecar on the back of it and a full load of spares and tools and stuff the X5 does it without even blinking.
Last week however, I towed my brother's Case bulldozer on a 2-axle braked trailer. Trailer weight 950kg. Case weight 2950kg. Thats about 8600 lb all up. I drove down the mountain where he lives, then up the other side - 25km trip. As you can imagine, I was a little worried at first - especially the downhill part.
No probs whatsoever. Awesome machine!

I use my 3.0d to pull my race car trailer. My Formula3 is small but for interstate races you end up taking most of the workshop and spares with you. The trailer is 30ft long and about 1600kg. The X5 pulls it easily and still gets at least 650km on a tank of diesel.

I have electric brakes so the trailer pretty much looks after itself stopping wise.
