X5 blowing out smoke????

Hello again everybody. I was driving from work tonight and I noticed when accelerating I saw smoke coming from the back end of the X5. I quickly pulled over into a parking lot. I was hearing a sound also coming from the engine. I quickly popped the hood and saw a little smoke but nothing big. I looked under the car to see if there was any fluid, but nothing. Called a tow truck (3hr wait). Once he came I saw engine oil on the ground. Not a lot but enough that it looked like coolant had leaked all out. Can someone tell me what this may be? I'm think head gaskets or valve cover problem? Or maybe worse. Need info on this asap. The car is at BMW right now waiting for them to open at 7am. Thanks.....

Hard to say without more info.

White smoke indicates coolant leak (head gasket, etc)
Blue smoke indicates oil leak (rings, etc)

Could also be an external oil leak, oil onto the exhaust for example.

You mention that there was oil on the ground, looking like the coolant had all leaked out. So which was it, oil or coolant?

Could be anything at this point, based on the info provided.

Good luck in any case.

No, it was engine oil that was on the ground. I touched it to make sure. No coolant was found. Just oil and yes it must have been leaking out on to the exhaust because that would explain the smoke when accelerating...

I saw the oil on the ground right under the engine a little to the right side of the car.

No i didn't check. It's like -25 in chicago and all I wanted was to get this car towed and then go home. But I looked in the engine and didn't find anything. Plus it was dark. What do you think it is? Any ideas from your experiences.... Thanks...

didn't have this experience in my car. my cousin has a camry, and on right before a bridge, his car started to smell of burnt rubber, and his engine started to smoke. we opened the engine hood to find it leaking oil very slowly. he looked in front of the engine where the oil filter was, and it was the filter that was leaking; it was punctured.

Yes, I did smell like burnt rubber also. But see my oil filter is on the left side of the car. The leak was some what in the middle but to the right. Do you think it could be bad valve cover?

Maybe being below zero and a slow leak of oil onto the exhaust manifold could cause the smoking?
