Actually, I am going to wait for the V8. I'm hoping that within the next 2 years the teething pains of the E90 will have been sorted out, and the nice people in Munich will keep the manual transmission as an option - just like they changed their minds on the new M5!!

By the way the e46 m3 has had some pretty serious engine problems and recalls. the factory is actually lowering the redline to 7600 rpm on all of them. It is a factory campain. They said the 8000 redline is causing the problem. IT develops 315hp at 7600rpm. I actually had an 01 e46 and got rid of it recently and di not like it that much. It is a great car but the new V8 should be spectacular in comparison

I noticed the same thing with my 4.4 when I got it. I thought off the line it kind of hesitated but then got on it, but then I remembered it was a 4000+lb SUV and got over it... haha

I think the hesitation has more to do with the 6spd auto mounted to the motor then the motor itself. It seems as though the transmission is always trying for the next gear, instead of running out the one its in.

My 05 4.4 hesitates as well but I mostly feel it when I pull out of a parking lot onto a main road. I think that the X knows the outer wheels and spinning faster than the inner and it won't put max power when you're in a turning position. Once close to straightened out, it takes off like a rocket.

I also think the M62 engine we have stinks in the lower idle range. I can't go a steady 1-2 MPH (a la creeping traffic) without it bucking. I'm having the dealer tech look at mine. I'll keep you posted if something miraculous comes of it.

Until then, I guess I'll just keep it straight and keep the pedal to the floor!

I'm sorry but that's just not true. The M3 still makes 333 hp at 7900 rpm, and the redline/fuel cutoff is at 8000 rpm. There are no plans to change the engine specs.

Back to the X5, I have a 4.4i on order and I hope it doesnt have this lagging problem. None of the other 4.4i's that I have driven had it.

I had a 2003 E46 M3...and while there was an issue with early S54 motors in the first E46's (aka the 2000-01) and the engine issue was infact a result of going OVER redline, there are no plans to make any changes to the outgoing S54 (aside from lowering the RPM to 7600 in the possible M Z4 roadster) as it sits in the current M3. I know I took my M to redline..and above..a ton and it had no issues. As well BMW offered, under warranty, S54 replacement with 100K extended motor warranty. This is what happens when you build on of the most potent I6 NA engine in existance...in the S54's case the driver is usually the issue (out of all the M3 owners I knew with engine issues...they admitted taking the car over the 8K band).

I hate to tell you but When i brought my 2001 M3 for sevice about 2 months ago i got it back and the rev limiter was cutting in at 7600 rpm. I called the dealer and they said BMW NA has made all dealers install new DME software that limits all e46 m3s to 7600 rpm. They were also instructed not to tell any customers unless they asked about it after it was done. Not believing this i searched for answers from BMW NA, Various Tuners friends with M3s and on M3 websites. Everything that i have read or everyone that i have talked to said this is what they are doing to all M3s and if you dont want it done do not bring it to the dealer. or else it will get installed with out you knowing about it which is what happened to me. It also happened to friends of mine with M3s. At 7600 rpm it makes 315hp. It does not make 333hp until 7900 rpm. active autowerkks and dinan are also lowering the rev limit on the M3s also. And the engines blowing had nothing to do with overreving allthough that will also cause it. It had to do with oil starvation at high rpms on the rod bearings. Engine failures also happened on SMG equipped cars which are impossible to over rev. How would you explain that.. BMW was trying to blame it on overevving until the SMG equipped cars started blowing up to.

Engineers from BMW directly said themselves that car should not have had an 8000 redline and it was because of marketing it did have the 8k redline.. That is why the ZM3 with the same exact engine made 315hp and redlined at 7600rpm and never had one problem with the same exact engine as in the M3.

The E46 M3 is a great car but not a car with out problems and actually it is the most unreliable M motor ever made. All though it is a great motor..
And i have owned an E30 M3 E36 M3 and an E46 M3. along with an E24 M6 and an E34 M5 And e39 M5. Actually my X5 is my first non M Bmw i have ever owned. and probably my last. I still have my M5 and will trade it for the new E60 M5 when it is out.

But dont fool yourself. The S54 engine is a ticking time bomb that is why i got rid of mine. BMW tried to say it was drivers overrevving until it started happening to SMG cars that cant overrev their engines. Then they started replaceing engines for free and then had a couple of recalls changing some parts on the engine and they are still blowing so recently they started to lower the rev limiter without telling customers while its at the dealer for routine service. On the other hand the S62 in the M5 is bulletproof that is a great engine.

ITs not a bad car but lately BMW is more into marketing than actually building great cars and its not just with Mcars its all of there cars. And i am getting tired of it. My x5 is full of problems and the dealer keeps giving me the run around and not fixing anything.

What's the point of talking about this on X5 forum?

come to roadfly m3 forum and do a search on this topic...then you will see how wrong you are.
