Would have made a huge difference. Go to tirerack.com and look up snow tires for you X, check out the difference in ratings then your OEM all-seasons.

Yes. They do grip substantially better. I drove through a pretty big snowbank leftover from plows because it was left in the middle of the intersection. I thought I'd get stuck because it was pretty darn high, but DSC just blinked a couple times and I got thru alright. Also, I had to drive through a foot of ice last night because the plows left a pile along the sides of the road (which means, also my driveway). It was a bit scary because I scraped the underbody (an awful CRRRRRRRRRR sound) while the X climbed over the frozen stuff, but I got through with some wiggling.

Wagner, how come your area did such a nice job on the snow removal?! Even my main roads have slush covered (read: ice-covered) spots.

That explains it - snow tires make the world of difference.

If you have summer tires you are really taking a huge risk driving in any snow. All seasons with get you around but not in the deep and heavy stuff.

Here in the NW CT we got about 8" of snow/ice mix. At the bottom of the driveway with main road plowed we collected close to 12". Stopped to pick up mail and went up the driveway no problem on 20" Pirelli's Snow & Ice. At slow speed you feel the car almost drift/float but no loss of control even for a sec. Actually joyful ride.
