I think 1st gear and maybe 2nd upshifts prematurely and don't know why. I think that engine reaches max hp at 6200rpm anyway, so you're not really being cheated of your 360 horses.

I must try this DSC off, manual mode on the X3.

The rev limiter would have prevented any damage to your engine. Also A BMW engine like most "sporty" engine can go over red zone for a short period of time without any impact on the engine.

I concur. I'm not technically robbed of my horses however we do fall off lower in the power range as a result. Also, as you said, it seems that 1st and 2nd do that, because when I pushed 3rd I reached 6500 with no auto upshifting, I had to shut it down because I was on the highway and it wasn't the appropriate time to test out any further...
