UPDATE - Figured it out -- see end of thread: New to Me X5 question re: Radar

Hi -- Just purchased my first X5 -- 2002 4.4i with 30k miles, CPO until 8/2008. This is my fifth BMW and I have encountered something that I don't know how to deal with. My X5 has built in Radar with lights that go off in the center dash (they are built in to the bottom of the center vent). It is a very professional install but the problem is I can't figure out how to turn it off!Anyone have any ideas where to start? Also -- In the picture below you will see that this X5 came with 20" Giovanna Ararat rims. To put it simply they just aren;'t my style -- anyone think that eBay would be a good place to sell these? Thanks in advance!Prior vehicles:2002 M3 SMG1997 540iA2000 528iA1994 Porsche 9681996 Range Rover HSE

No idea, but it doesn't look like you have had a proper welcome to the board yet. :xoutpost: Glad to have you aboard

Post some pics of the unit, and more of your X5.

Use a fix from the 80s that many people did to surpress the flashing "12:00" on their VCRs, black electrical tape.

Sorry couldn't resist.

Welcome!

Can you post pix of the installation and perhaps snoop around to see if you can find any associated electronics?

Rim & Radar

Yep -- from my research I've found that these rims are very expensive but they are definitely not my style so they are going to be sold rapidly. All four have new 275/40/20 Scoprion's on them.As for the radar the thing that bugs me the most is the audible alarms -- it seems that a speaker is built in to the driver's vent and it scares the h*ll out of me every time it goes off. The red lights are built into the frame of the vent and seem to indicate the direction of the radar source -- they function independently.I will do some more research tonight and try and take some pictures. the lights are so well installed that you can't even see them until they go off -- they are perfectly flush with the frame. I have attached a picture of the vent / NAV and you can just make out the lights on either side of the center vent.

To all -- forgot to thank the members & operators of this site -- it was an invaluable resource for me as I searched for my X5. It was funny to read the issues with the 4.4i engine -- same ones I had in my 540. I look forward to sharing and learning, and thanks again for a great site.

The site is only as good as it's members . Glad it was useful during your search.
