Well, it's no Jeep Rubicon. You would be OK driving on unpaved roads, or hardpack sand, but I wouldn't try rock crawling with it.

x5 is no off-road truck.

search youtube for x5 and offroad. Youll find some videos of a guy testing out the X. There are like 5 videos at least from him. In two or three of them he gets stuck and it takes him a long time to get out or he had to get a tow.

I've done some semi-serious offroading with the X5, I had the 3.0 and now have switched to a 4.8. I have to say that the 3.0 was much better due to the softer suspension. The 4.8 is so sport oriented that it makes dealing with rough terrain worse. My 3.0 did NOT have adjustable ride height whereas the 4.8 does have it... honestly I FEEL like the 4.8 has less clearance, even at the raised position. But I have been unable to confirm it as there is no data out there regarding clearance with adjustable ride height.

Thanks. I have had a 3.0 and had it off road, and was rather impressed. No its not a jeep, but I did get through a few things that I didn't think I should.
I thought the clearance was just over 8inches, and the 4.4 and 4.8 we slighltly less as you mentioned.
I am thinking about getting a 4.8is. I know the cars are very different, do you like the 4.8 and would you make the change again?
My other option would be to get a new 3.0.

Well, for starters, the 20" wheels and tires obviously won't get very far

When equipped properly, the X5 (and X3 for that matter) fare decently off-road, but don't try stuff that's Jeep-territory. It's a Sports Activity Vehicle, not a Sports Ute.........

Yeah, I was thinking that I would get another set of wheels for those 6 off road days a year and 3 now days.
18inch is the way to go?

Save the X and buy and FJZ-80 (Older 80 Series Land Cruiser) for the off road stuff. You can pick one up for 8k. The solid front axle, front and rear locking diffs, optional center locking diff....the truck is made to be beat on.

Save the X for the performance stuff.........
