Any idea if this is normal?

Same thing happens on my '03 X5 3.0 first thing in the morning. I'm not concerned. It's a big vehicle and I imagine the tranny takes some time to warm up.

No it is not normal for you to have to rev the motor to have the transmission engage. There are various issues with the 6spd auto's in the X5. Some have issues engaging, some seem to grasp for gears while slowing...the dealer has software loads that should remedy the situation. Since you are under warranty and everything is free...you should most definitely take it to a dealer. If anything to document the issue.

Maybe I should be concerned! Thanks Wagner. Although I don't have to rev as high as the OP there still is hesitation on that first slip into D in the morning.

Thank you Wagner
Yes, WagnerX5, you were right. My EGS Control Unit was reprogrammed, it was a known problem which is corrected now. They fixed it under warranty, but they also would (for free), if the warranty is already expired.
Thanks again!

Yes, this was a documented problem in both the X3 and X5, and the 330i equipped with automatics. A delayed engagement in D in cold engine temps (first start usually). A reprogram, as you have demonstrated, fixes it all.
