If its a Mk4 it will say "DVD" right on the front. If not its a MK3. The Mk3 uses CD its a set of 6 or 7 CD-roms depending on where you live will determine what disk you need to use. I believe the MK4 just uses one DVD as it can hold more information.

Just look at your Nav unit and see if it says DVD where you load the disk.

All the disks can be picked up at the stealer or cheaper on ebay.

I believe the MK4 Navs started with the 2004 X5's. However, you can purchase one on eBay and just swap out your MK3. It's plug and play since the MK4 uses the same connector as the MK3.

Mk4's started with the 2003 model year, and the latest DVD map is the 2007.2 version.

I believe it was with the second half of 2003. Early 2003's were still equipped with the MK3.

my recollection is even the early 2003's had the Mk4, but they came with a CD disk because the DVD's weren't ready yet from navteq. I could be wrong, though

You could be right. I may be confusing the X5's with the case of the M3's.

Have any of you swapped MK4 for MK3 ?

I recently bought a 2001 X5 3.0 with Nav. The CD unit in back will not load a CD. I have been through the hints/tips on fixing it, and it doesn't fix. So, I am looking to get a used unit from ebay. I think I should "upgrade" and buy a MK4 unit while I am at it. Everything I have found says the MK4 "SHOULD" swap directly to upgrade from a MK3 with no troubles. Before I spend the money, I was just hoping someone might have actually been-there done-that, to give me some warm-fuzzy that it actually works in first hand real time experience.

TIA
