tow hitch wiring

when i fitted the tow bar to my x5 the wiring kit was genuine with the multi plug that connected to the wiring harness in the back of the car
there was a single wire coming from the multi plug with a female spade connector
does any1 know if this wire needs to be connected to something or is it just a connection point for extra equipment

I put a BMW hitch and wiring harness on my X5, and mine did not have the extra wire you are refering to. Perhaps it is something for the different plug that you use in the UK?
