For a hitch-mounted rack, look at the Draftmaster, Thule 916, Yakima Hookup, or Saris Cycle-On. All of these mount the bikes rigidly, so that they don't move around and bang against each other. The Draftmaster is a vertical mount, the others use a tray across the back of the vehicle.

thule 964 revolver & thule 916 t2 hitch bike racks are awesome

The Thule 916 T2 and Thule 964 Revolver hitch bike racks are probably the best hitch mount bike racks available because they are the easiest and sturdiest models out there. They are easy because to load the bikes requires no real effort. All you do for the 916 T2 rack is raise the bike arm and then push it down so it clamps onto the front wheel and thats it. You have to lift the bike onto the 964 Revolver but the cradles that the bike sits in fit the bike really snugly and also prevent the bike from swaying around and possibly hitting other bikes or the back of the car. The neat thing about the 964 is that it can also swing away from the rear of the car, even when the bikes are loaded up, so that you can fully access the rear of the car. The 916 T2 will fold up when you don't need it so that you can pull into a garage or parallel park no problem.

Probably not much help, but I had already purchased the Thule 958 2 bike hitch mount carrier because one of the X5's I was purchasing had the trailer hitch already installed. The '02 I bought doesn't have the hitch, so I have yet to test the rack out, but from what I understand you can't go wrong with Thule. Mine is the cheapest model they have, but I will only be carrying one bike on it the majority of the time so it should be more than adequate. I think I paid $125 for it shipped.
