hmm. okay. Must be the way the engine's designed. The valve cover gaskets are leaking, and are a known problem on my '96 ES. The wierd location of the intake and angle of the engine make matters worse.

After 8 years...and plenty of spirited drives, plenty of parts must be replaced if the car is to run as it did when new. I will be replacing lots of gaskets and hoses soon. This car is worth $600 of parts and a couple of days of getting greasy!

Got my car back today. Both valves cover gaskets were replaced again. Hope this time they will last more than 3 weeks only.
Parts: Valve covers gasket: $33 each, RTV: $28. Total parts: $94
Labor: $180 for 4.5h. The does not make any sense as it means a $40/h rates only.
Total: $294 with taxes. All covered by warranty like the last time.
The interesting thing is that the last time labor was $360 for the same time.
Go figure!

That's not bad IMO, every car needs maint. done at some point, it's a machine and it breaks down, especially a high perf. machine like our Bimmers.

With regular maintenance, even my 94 325is runs like "new". The only issue that concerns me w on the X5 is the transmission - Other than the tranny, all is manageable at either an independent mechanic or with some elbow grease.

I sure enjoy not having to make a car payment every month
