Need to replace fuel pump?

I've had an SES light come on and off for the past couple months. "Camshaft position sensor".

I changed the fuel filter and it went away for 200 miles. It then reappeared.
I changed the air filter. It went away and it then reappeared.

Today I had 80 miles left on the tank and my car suddenly died. It turned on and died. I hit the gas and it would die. Sudden loss of power. I was lucky to make it home. Had to turn it on several times in 1-1.5 miles. I've had the same problem before but it seemed to have been solved with the fuel filter. Now my problems are back.
My only guess is.. fuel pump?

The only thing I have not changed on my 2001 3.0 with 102,000 miles is the spark plugs. I doubt that could be the problem however.

How about you change the camshaft position sensor?

How about changing the Camshaft Position Sensor???

Have not dealt with this issue with the X5 but have seen this appear on some e39 M5's and performance is affected by this problem. Change it and see how it works.

So the sensor has the ability to make my car stall and have a sudden loss of power?
Guess I'll replace the sensor.

Yes.
You'll need the code to find out which to replace.

I wouldn't rule out the F/P crapping out @ 102k. My F/P crapped out on my E38 at around the same mileage. Same symptoms as Aimster described.

Yes. Faulty intake or exhaust CPS can have those symptoms. The symptoms can also come and go at random. The fact that you changed the fuel filter and it was good for 200 miles was just coincidence.

It says camshaft position sensor A - Bank 1.

Is that exhaust or intake?
