Water in Rear Near Fuses

I was putting my golf clubs in the back of my X5. I decided to remove the rear right panel/cover opposite the stereo or navigations system side.

I realized that there was about 12 ounces of water at the bottom!!! I could not believe my eyes. I don't tow a boat with my X5 so I am clueless as to how this has happened. I did notice some vents in that area but I'm not sure, due to some small rubber flaps on the vents, how water could have gotten in. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!
