I just pro-actively changed my 01 battery after I found it dead after a two week trip. I figured it would be better to change on my schedule, not to mention a potential boost charge. I got an OEM battery under a different name for C$145.00

practically each 2nd gas station offers a simple test on life longivity of the acumulator..proximity of 2-4 month probably does not matter.
they say original should live 6-7 years .it.is possible...depend on a lot of things..

I would assume the group49 would fit the 3.0 as well. So, if you can find the group49 battery, why not give that a shot?

The group 49 does fit the 3.0! The battery boxes in all X5s have the proper mounting holes for bolting down both sizes of batteries. Just a matter of screwing the hold-down bolt into a different hole.

My oem battery died two days ago, it lasted about 3 years. I bought 100amp battery (oem is 90amp) made by Varta Germany to replace it. Fits good! Costs about US$120.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Bought a Group 49 Autocraft Titanium from Advance Auto $80 ... and its the same size as the OEM one that came out ... same dimensions everything .. even used the same mounting hole ... even the width was same ... (from what i have read on the web, there is a difference of almost an inch in width between 49 and 94R) ... i am the first owner of the X5 . .so either my 3.0 came with 49 battery or switched by the dealer for some reason ... or there is no physical dimensional difference between the two ...

FWIW, Autozone had the duralast for $70 - but it looked beatup and dated 01/07 ... Advance Auto Autocraft I got was 05/07 ...

I didnt lose any preset stations / GPS retained all the locations etc .. all i had to do was reset time and date ... hth!

they say the batteries are maintenance free but i was wondering if adding water to them once a year would keep the battery running for a longer time?

Mine is now 28 months old with 32k on the odo, and is 'suspect'. Went flat due to a faulty tailgate mechanism in February and the dealer is not yet convinced of what the problem is. They can't find a current drain, but after about 4 days or so the engine gets progressively slower to turn over. Two weeks and it's dead.
