Let me know if you learn anything about this. I plan to spend some time on this on Saturday.

Well it has to be an accessory to the engine: water pump, alternator, fan, belts.....

One guy had the shop replace a pump (water??) but it turned out to be his alternator and another guy found out it was the "viscous fan". Not quite sure what the "viscous fan" might be. Sounds like Fletch's "svetser" valve!!! It's all ball bearings these days!!

I want to get under the hood while my trusty assistant (fiance) gives it some gas. I will try and locate the souce of the noise..... if that does not work it will be off to a quite reputable indy shop around here.

My 4.4 does this also - sounds like a supercharger... especially in a parking garage!

Well I found out what the noise is. It turns out it is the transmission. Yup, me too. I need a new trans.... It amazes me how many X5's have transmission problems. Definitely sounds like BMW put a defective transmission into the X5..... this vehicle should be able to go to 100k miles without having this issue. Oh yea, my CV joint that I haven't replaced not needs replacing. Luckily I have a good aftermarket warranty!!!

Just came across this thread -- Did you end up getting the transmission replaced or fixed?

I'm also getting a "hoot" / whine noise on my x5 when accelerating and downshifting. I recorded the noise -- can you have a listen and see if this sounds like the same transmission noise that you have?
X5_Shift_Noise.mp3

FYI - Here is the thread that I started: Clicky

Thanks

My garage is making a call to the aftermarket warranty company tomorrow. Apparently BMW nor indy shops fix the tranny, they just replace them....

I tried listening to your sound clip but I could not really hear the whining noise. The noise I had was only while the car was under load, driving. It really sounded like the whining of a supercharger.....

Thanks - sorry for the poor quality. I'm guessing you were having a different noise, mine is that "hoot" or rubbing sound that you can hear on the recording (it only lasts for a second after punching the accelerator...)

Good luck with the fix
