SMG is Sequential Manual Gearbox. It is a manual transmission with a conventional clutch that is actuated with a computer and hydraulic servos. In "automatic" mode it will chose the correct gear based on speed and demand. In manual mode, the gears are selected by the paddles or stick. I am very pleased with the function of SMG on my M3, the shifts are smooth and precise and faster than a human could do manually. Hope this helps.
