Oops!

Ok, so I let my girlfriend drive the X5 tonight, (trying to be nice) and no sooner have we left the driveway, then she backs into my neighbors' trashcan. Not much damage, just the painted plastic molding over the rear hatch handle (below the BMW symbol) has broken in two. The "check license plate light" is on and I think one of the bulbs may have been broken. Any idea on the cost to replace the painted plastic molding, light, and resetting the "check license plate light?" Part numbers would also be helpful. If it's any consolation, she feels horrible. Thanks.

Well, I called the dealership and they claim that the plastic hatch handle piece cannot come separately. I will supposedly have to replace the entire handle assembly. The total cost of the part, paint, and install comes to about $320 USD. I'm a little surprised, but not shocked. Any suggestions? Thanks

Last night's mishap was the first time she had ever driven the X. You'd think a woman who drove a Porshe would be more careful, but at least it wasn't worse. Anyways, I'll let ya know how it turns out.

I can confirm that entire part is one assembly. My license plate light was out and I had the check license light message. After replacing the light, the light was still out. The dealership had to order, paint and install the entire grab strip above the license plate.
