Wierd Fan / Vent Issue

When I went to drive to work today I noticed that no cool air was blowing out of the vents, so I turned it on full blast and virtually nothing. I can feel cold air barely drizzle out so I know the air conditoning seems to be fine (this happens without air conditioning on also). Basically no air is getting blown out of the vents at all. When I got out of the car I didnt hear the main fan blowing either (right behind the front grill) althoug I'm not sure thats even the fan that powers the inside vents / cooling system. Basically just need some advice if this is a known issue or anyone has run into it before or where to start loooking thanks in advance to all.

What year X5, how many miles?

The first thing I would look at is the Final Stage Resistor. This is an easy DIY job and is a VERY common failure point in the climate control system. Check the FSR article on the homepage which explains how to change it. The part is not expensive... Morristown BMW can send one out to you very quickly. They hooked me right up when my FSR failed.

Good luck.

It's an 01 3.0 with 93k on it, and yah I did a lot of reading on the FSR and actually purchased one already (autohausaz.com) found from the DIY, so hopefully that is it (I was impatient and figured even if its not it not bad to have on hand and cheaper than taking it to the dealer for inspection). Other things i found was someone said to check fuse #59 and possibly the microfilter. Do you know where the microfilter is located and or any other possibilities. Thanks

This sounds like a FSR case to me. Let us know when you put the new one in.

The microfilter is found under the hood, up near the firewall. Click the pic for the DIY article.

This sounds exactly like my problem, and I was just hoping to expand on it.

I actually noticed that after driving for a while (hour straight or so) the vent stopped blowing cold air. I could feel the cold air at the vent, but it would trickle out at any fan setting. However, lately I was getting "cloudy" air (like seeing your breath on very cold day) occassionally coming from the center (mainly left center) vents. Also, it does not seem to be as cold of air lately, even on MAX AC.

I see the culprits might be this FSR issue, the auxillary fan not working (in front of the radiator), and/or good old fashion loss of r-134a in the system.

Can anyone give some insite on some simple self tests to determine which, if not all, might be the culprit, before going in for costly service, and what might be the order, based on my issues, I should address these items, as well as any items know to "fail" on my model year regarding the AC?

BTW: I have a 2001 X54.4i, and to the best of my knowledge, have never had the AC serviced.

I checked the auxillary fan while running the AC and it is spinning like a top. So I can probably rule that one out (Unless it stops periodically while I'm not watching).

What is the cost of the FSR? Is this something that is cheap enough that you can just replace it for good measure, is there a way to determine if it is this item?

I had the same problem. Everything under the hood seemed to be fine. So I followed the instructions from the link Brit6 posted on replacing the FSR. The only problem I encounted was that the FSR is on the drivers side (Australian).
I didn't replace the FSR I just disconnected it and then reconnected it. Everything started to work.
