There are threads implicating the K&N filiers for causing problems with the mass air flow sensor by oil coating it. I would use the OEM paper filter and throw it away when it is dirty.

I have been using a K&N filter for 2 1/2 years now. Did not have any problem with it but I did not notice any difference with the OEM one in performance nor fuel consumption after I installed it.

In terms of performance I think it would be noticeable in the high revs only. Our cars are so heavy that it's hard to notice any pick-up/throttle response. I remember taking over 100 lbs off the car (120-140) and noticed no difference!
Maybe with a throttle body upgrade, exhaust and software one can see an improvement? The CAI sound in the X5 is very sweet though, it's nothing like in my E36 3.2L engine. |

I think to be honest, the K&N will not do anything performance wise for you! that you will notice anyway. If you want performance do a complete intake with throttle body upgrade. you should notice something then.

Thanks a lot for all of your opinions! I wish I would have raised this inquiry before I bought it. Now I decide not to use the K&N thing and go stick with OEM. Thanks again.
