Exclamation Engine Clicking Noise

It just started happening recently. It comes and goes, but usually always consistent on start up...there is a click-click-click-click noise from the transmission. It's annoying and I'm afraid it could lead to bad news...any ideas anyone?

My engine has nearly 90k miles now

Curious if there was a resolution as well. Mine did the same thing today when I started it up and did it again at about 5 miles.

check engine oil. My wife's X does this when oil gets low... note that she can be 2+ quarts low and still not get an oil light in the car.

Ive never heard a transmission click. I'd check your engine oil and transmission fluid. Be sure it's HOT when you check the transmission fluid as that is when it would be at it's lowest.

Also, if you've never done it - change the transmission fluid and filter. It takes about one hour to do, and is well worth it.

I hope its NOT your timing chain guides...

Yeah, I'm getting clicking noises too! Noticed it about a month ago. Usually clicking noises is pronounced on startup and the engine is idle. My wife pointed it out to me when she was in the garage and I started the car. Pretty load when I rolled the windows down. Probably makes noise during driving also, just that I don't hear it since windows are usually up (and I'm driving). This is annoying and like the original poster, I am scare of what it foreshadows! 2005 X5 3i.

Got my x5 back from dealer today. As part of the AC fix / refix, they noticed that my fan belts and compressor belts were bad. According to them, that's where the noises were coming from. They replaced the belt and charged me $85 with any labor charge since they had the system out already to diagnose the AC problem.
