lots of them tust cant read data from car. that is problem. i had before obdI interface and wotked perfectly. but OBDII i bought 3 diferent tried with 3 different laptops and 2 cars. none of them could work without errors.

My response was predicated on the message threads prior to yours. JayX5 and rodberg007 were speaking of OBDII port scanners available at Autozone or eBay. Excuse me if I'm not a mindreader, but it wasn't until your 3rd message that you spoke of wanting to perform both diagnostics and programming through the OBDII port.

If you bought the software and pass through devices to emulate the BMW GT1/SSS diagnostics system on eBay, my condolences to you. Chances are you bought something that was cloned in China or Russia and by the same eBay auctioneers selling fake Rolex watches and bootleg copies of the Simpsons Movie.

If you want to do it right, you can buy the entire BMW OBDII GT1/SSS diagnostics system from a BMW approved vendor. It's all spelled out right here:

Figure about $7,000 including a BMW approved laptop workstation. There was a write up in Bimmerfest by Cobra Dave on the configuration he uses. Good luck with your quest...

I am not aware of any software available for the x5 that will read and write bin files for the engine control stuff, only readers. I got an auto xray that works great, but whoever said some do not work on these cars that should (if it is OBDII compliant, it should) is correct.

The protocols are all different from one manufacturer to the next, so your reader/software must be able to interface with the BMW software. Not all of them do.

All cars after 95 must have an OBDII interface; that is how the inspection guy checks your car for emissions compliance.

i dont understand what people who have 7000$ FOR TOY LIKE THAT ARE LOOKING FOR IN FORUMS? YOU DONT NEED ANY HELP, JUST GO TO YOUR DEALER AND PAY THEM ALL THE MONEY THEY WANT, AND THEY WILL DO IT FOR YOU.
one more thing obdII is not rocket science ok? there are lot of cheap chinese scaners that can do lots more than that original bmw stupid toy...
i had it to.. older version. and it was prety slow and worst than any other scaner i used...

Shame as I thought a handheld item ,(with proper insides- not cheapo copy) would be fine as a basic indication re faults - albeit I appreciate that more expensive kit would do a better job.


I have previously asked re the ability to read DIAG codes retrieved on the dash of E39 and E53 dash displays as retrieved via the secret menus. The codes appeared to be BMW specific and nobody was able to tell me what the codes translated into as far as OBD2 data was concerned.

Can you confirm the method used to interpret/translate the DIAG codes on the dash into OBD2 data ?

Have you been able to do the above ?

Is there a list explaining the individual DIAG codes and meanings?

I don't believe the secret menu will reset codes thrown but I am also aware codes can often clear themselves when failed components replaced/fixed.
