My first blown window regulator

I guess I'm officially part of the club now. Front passenger window regulator gave out after about 72k miles and 5 yrs. Hopefully the others will stay functional (knocking on wood). Saw the nice DIY on this site after I got the work done from the stealer and got charged 300 for labor and 186 for the part.

If anyone in the atlanta area has this happen to them and want to tackle this as a diy job, let me know as I would love to be a helping hand and also learn in the process myself.

My driver's side regulator went out 1st week I owned it. I opted to pay for the repair. A friend did it cost me $360 parts and labor in Scottsdale, AZ.
Dealer wanted $675.
Now you're a certified X5 owner!

Lost the right rear one at 80mph on I-70 in eastern Colorado 2 weeks after picking up my 2001 in NYC. Thought someone had shot out my window, it gave such a loud 'crack'. Had to pull into a WalMart at the next town for cardboard, plastic bag, and duct tape to seal it. The pressure & wind noise kept me under 60mph otherwise. Wasn't until I got to Denver that I was told I still had a window. Being it was Friday afternoon, they taped it 'up' and saw me off to my home in Idaho. Only one so far(said in as hushed & quiet a tone as possible)

I've had 2 go in 1 month. Drivers and then right rear...it did the same thing as X5Flyboy's did - loud crack - thought I'd been shot! I paid $165 for the front regulator and $130 for the rear and did them myself. Not fun but now that I've done it I'm an old pro at it and so I went ahead and ordered the other 2 to have on hand as I'm sure one's gotta blow soon!

Good job on getting it done yourself. How long did it take to do one window? Did you need an extra pair of hands or any specialized tools?

Damn, me too. I have a 2001 x5, and the passenger window was starting to make a funny noise when the window would go up. I put the window completely down yesterday, and it wouldn't go up. It would move about 1/2 inch and then just stop. Does that sound like the regulator?

Been lucky with the X5 haven't had one break yet (knock on wood). The 330xi however, a total of 5 regulators. When one of them failed it was so loud I thought the window exploded and it put a scratch/tear in the tint. Luckily the car was still under warranty so the dealer covered it all including the replacement tint.

If it sounds like the motor is churning broken glass, Yup!

The first time I did it it took about 1 1/2 hours. Now I can do it in about 1/2 that time. The worst part for me was getting the door panel off and then that black foam insulation off and not sticking to everything - me included. And it's greasy. But having an extra pair of hands can be a help or a hindrance! ;o)
