HELP, Fuel Gauge is.. ill at ease! (technicals inside)
(I posted on bimmerforums a week ago, no replies. I think they deal mostly with cars) Anyways, I have a 2001 BMW x5 3.0 standard  , 60,000miles.The fuel gauge is acting up: -It moves when you turn on the key. -Its been reading about ¼ tank. -It was working normal the other day... Now it's back to 1/4th. After some Google searching I found this. Quote:
If this is the problem, I would like to take a shot at cleaning up the "non-conducting deposit" (corrosion?) on the contacts of the sending unit before resorting to the repair shop. Can somebody explain how to get to this thing? So far: -I do not know the shape or exact location of the fuel tank (I can’t find Google pictures) -I popped off the right side of the cargo bay + a cushion between the seat and door -I can only see a small part of the tank. (No connections visible)  -I do not want to spend hours popping off random panels. -I am open to all suggestions or help anybody is willing to give. Thanks -Wes

Tank is under the rear seat. I don't know if the units can be serviced so I would just replace both senders.

Mine will reregister at fillup, but stops just below 1/4 tank as I use it. I have ran out of gas probably 4 times this year (needless to say I need to replace my fuel filter).
If you pull up the rear seat bottom, you will see some wires that run into some rubber boots - I believe these are going to the fuel guage sending units. If you proceed with this, please let us know how it goes. I really want to get mine fixed.

Found the problem...
 Mouse poop smells bad. I was not bargaining for this  I spliced the wires back together.. It took a while for the computer to come out of "limp mode" (making the gauge read properly) It's been working great for a few days now Thanks Last edited by Oem; 10-05-2007 at 06:45 PM.

Mice did this? You better look around for other damage too.
