My advice... Don't buy a Land Rover, they are at the bottom of the reliability list every single year, and they break all the time. I had a Land Rover once. Now as far as off road, they are incredible... Anyway, I would go with the Lexus GX ($46-47k base price), they look good, they are very comfortable and safe, perfect for a big family.

NO,NO,NO - I say get rid of the back seats and make it a 2dr - a TRUE sports activity vehicle - who thinks of passengers when looking for performance??? - more weight will subtract from performance and mileage - while a bit less weight could only add - less? or more? - I'm for more performance - besides, you drive alot more safely and carefull with passengers ( or at least you should! ) - I've got my van to haul people - it's smooth and comfortable and feels better than my Lazyboy - but my X5 is for me - the difference is like comparing taking a cat shot off a carrier or flying commercial - me, I want the cat shot ( which I have both figuratively and literally )

Damn LA! how dare you burst my bubble!LOL!! Im one of the guilty posers who cares just as much about reaction and prestige, than the driving experience...I know, I know..Shame on me..

But IMHO, the LR3 is the only vehicle besides the GX that can remotely compete with the X in terms of looks and refinement...However, being the car salesman that I am, I cant deal with an unreliable vehicle..Forgive me man, but I need to get a few more critiques before I hang up my curiosity about them...Like I said, I get pretty good $$$ breaks on Land Rover and Bimmer, so thats the other motivation for looking in the LR's direction...But I value your opinion!! Are they really that bad guys?!

I guess I get to answer my own post! I just got back from an hour test drive in an LR3 V8SE. Hmm..First of all, I LOVE the drive..The stlr rep was excellent..Gave all the pros AND cons. (I think..LOL). It was extremely comfortable to drive.....

Anyway-

Good things: Love the "minimalist box" design..Pretty snazzy gadgets, and the suspension mechanism(s) are pretty cool, and handy for people who need and or use them (not me)...The Nav was really good, and so was the stereo..400 bucks for the upgraded 13 speakers HK..6 disc std in all models as well...The ride was extremely quiet and smooth...

Bad things: 3 damn moonroofs and only one opens up?!! WTF?!? And for the V6, hardly any of the options are available! you have to get an V8SE to get the least of options...And one question for ALL you car makers...Its a spring and a lever..SO WHY THE HELL CAN YOU NOT MAKE REAR SEATS RECLINE!! HOW HARD IS IT?!? ARGHH!! Just had to get that out of my system..

Anyway, I only have 2 weeks to decide, or else I wont make the Sept-Oct delivery, and will not be able to get one shipped back to the US...Its crunch time...

Yes they are, actually when I had a Discovery, it was about the most comfortable car I ever had, I could drive 8 hours, and not feel any back aches or num legs... It was truly a love-hate relationship, which I think is what most land rover owners feel. I did some serious off-road with it, and it never let me down, but it spent it's fair share of time at the shop. The thing with Land Rover, is that it's never a big thing, leaks, transmision got stuck, more leaks, electricle problems etc... but it adds up (by far the most expensive car I ever owned as far as maintenance), and they don't age well (look at most older Land Rover compare to BMW's). Now if you lease it, then you should be fine.

B: if/when you head back to the Colonies, why not wait until then for decision time/new car pick time? My only 2Cts is that buying a new $35-40+++ car, under duress or, within a short time table constraint, is seldom the way to go. GL,md

I have driven the new Discovery, LR3, and I can report it is an excellent drive.
One amazing thing was how quickly the air suspension can adjust ride height.
Another plus is the Sat Nav is one of the few that works off road.
The driving experience was a good one all round, not X5 league, but very comfortable, a lot of this is probably down to it's sheer weight.
As you have been warned here, the biggest thing you could face is reliability.
However, Land Rover's time under BMW ownership may have paid dividends in that this new vehicle looks very well put together.
Good luck whatever you decide,
you could get a good one

I am not sure that it paid dividends, which is why BMW didn't keep it, they couldn't make it work... I doubt that Ford can do a better job. Which is too bad, because they do build good looking cars and the best off-roaders on the planet... If it was not for the poor quality, I would have probably bought an other one...
