0W-40 engine oil for X5 4.8 or 4.6

Has anyone tried the 0W-40 synthetic engine oil for their 4.6/4.8? I was surfing the Mobil website and they recommend 0W-40 for X5 4.8. The X5 manual says approved oils are 5w-40 and 5w-30. Which oil is good for 4.8? Like to know what experts here have to say.

Might be a great oil for your neck of the woods during the cold winter months (you know when temps are 32F or below).....The 0W-40 seems to cover a large area of viscosity.

Usually, the BMW has 5W-30 oil in their engine. So I am sure you can use the Mobil 1. However, since BMW is still paying for your maintainance, just use their oil and stick with their oil for the in-between "free oil change".

hmmm i use Mobil 1 5w30 in between the maintaniance oil change.. Would that hurt the engine? i have 2005 4.4..

Does anyone on this board use Amsoil? LOT better oil than Mobil plus 1yr/25k miles interval. It also does a lot better in wear tests, flash point, etc.

I have over 6000 miles on my X and I recently did a 1950 mile long trip. Should I change the oil myself now or wait for the scheduled 15k miles service?

Can't go wrong with BMW oil. I did oil changes on both of my cars with Mobil 0w-40 and it was fine. I did notice that my X5 seem a little stiff on pull off at a light but after ~300 miles, she was back to normal again. I will change my oil at 7500 miles and let the dealer do the normal change at 15k. Another site I participate in for my car has had many debates on this same topic. Overall other than BMW oil, (which you wont get any debate on) Mobil 0w-40 was recommended due to the the same specs as BMW's brand. In fact when you purchase 0w-40, it says for European cars. Just my two cents.

I have heard that amsoil is the best oil you can buy. It is incredible. Almost all race teams use it.

I was going to change the oil in my x5 at 7500 and then let the dealer do the 15000 miles for free. But before i changed it at 7500 i took some oil out and had it tested. They said it was fine and did not have to be changed. and it will probably be fine up until 15k. the recomend i test it again around 12k just to be sure. Also my X5 did not burn a drop of oil in 7500 miles. So all though i was worried about going 15k with no oil change i figured if the oil is still fine and bmw recomends 15 changes. what the hell is the point of changing it early. I am going to have it tested again at 12k just to make sure. But all though i am very particular about my cars and maintenance i figured bmw must be right about this and didnt want to waste my time and money doing it in between the schedueled changes.

I believe the oil can go the 15k with no issues but its the filter that breaks down over time. This a very worst case scenario (below link) but interesting. Does it relate to this discussion, probably not because we care about our BMW's but interesting never the less to know that folks out there are oblivious to regular oil changes.

hmmm 0w-40? i used 5w30 mobil 1 and i changed my oil right after break in period and i found a lot of metal shaving when i drained the oil after break in period.. any one else useds 5w30 for oil change in between the maintainace from the dealer?
