measuring rotor thickness

i have a digital caliper and it looks like it will fit around the rotor with the wheel on. What is the acceptable thickenss range? Are front/rear the same specs?

I just came from the dealer to replace my rotors and pads. It says in the job order that minimum thickness should be 28.4M (I think its millimeter but not sure) Hope that helps

The minimum thickness for discs is stamped into the disc itself. With a rag (to clean off dust), a torch and without removing wheels my discs read:
28.4 mm front and 10.4 mm rear. My X5 is '05 Diesel, but I believe that, apart from the 4.6/4.8 litre engines, the brakes are the same.
Regards Colin.

cool thanks!

i haven't tried or looked very hard yet, but is their a shroud or break dust shield in the way that would prevent getting a caliper in there to measure?

No problem getting at the front discs. The rears look to be difficult. You could perhaps sneak your vernier caliper onto the disc between the dust shield and the brake caliper. Good luck.
Colin.

yep... don't even bother with rear passenger if you got the wheel on. I was able to slip the digital vernier caliper in the notch on top of the caliper between the dust shield and the brake caliper on the rear driver side.

It measured 10.85mm, so I am getting close to the minimum rotor thickness of 10.4mm. I would imagine the passenger side is a similar thickness.

So how long do I have left? I don't drive the car much as it is. I don't think the break lining light has come on yet either.

It sounds like stock rotors and Axxis pads are the way to go? Where is the best place to procure these items for the lowest price?

I was told the fronts were done recently. I can check the service history, but I will probably go measure them anyway for piece of mind.
