Noises from my 4.4 2001

Hi
This is my first post on the forum. I have read many articles and find this web site fantastic for information -well done to everyone !!

Okay here are my problems... I bought a 2001 4.4 X5 last week with 62K and have a few issues with it.

1. Steering wheel squeeking - I read a good article - steering bearings or slip ring lubrication required. Tried to lubricate bottom bearing but just see green plastic seal and don't see how lubrication could get into bearing. I'm trying from above - couldn't see it from below. I'm a little nervous about taking off the steering wheel to access the top section??
2. A humming noise which changes pitch (sounds like an impeller?) is coming from front of engine bay (seems like behind radiator or under power steering resevoir). When I turn the fan off on the climate control - the noise disappears
3. Lastly the car seems to rev higher than I would expect when driving - it growls like a Formulae 1. Needs more pedal than I would expect.

Any help on the above would be greatly appreciated !

the steering wheel - squeaks when turning or when repositioning? I had replaced the in/out motor which now sqeaks during positioning. I only hope it will quiet down in time. Otherwise, I'm going back to have it looked at. - If during turning, I really don't know, but can suggest some gear grease for the rack'n'pinion.

That "humming" I can't tell you as I'd be only guessing - may I suggest you look up some of the threads here on this website - most answers can be found that way - my usual response is to turn up the volume

Did you get a service history with the X5? Do you know how it was driven by previous owner(s)? Where was it driven? (ie, my 2001 had 2 owners, the original was a 3yr/36K lease in the Philadelphia area, the 2nd owner put less than 6,000 miles on it the year he owned it, using for skiing trips) Still I learned from this website that some hoses were due to be replaced and the water pump fails between 60-80K. I had also budgeted work to replace belts and give it a thorough going over to replace anything marginal. One of which was the final stage resistor for the a/c, a very typical problem for the X5.

I'm not a DIY kinda guy, but there are a few fearless types here that can probably help you out or steer you to the posted information. Best of luck with your X5
