CAVEAT: Never open it when the motor is on.

If you open the radiator it will not hurt the system at all, or "introduce air" to it. You would have to create air bubbles then trap them in the system to do that. Never, never, never, never open the radiator when it is hot. Unless you are a fan of the idea of 150+ degree coolants spraying on you.

Max level on the tank question

Hi,
I had a question about were the Max line is located. In the '01 X5 owners manual it states:

"The coolant level is correct when the end of the red float is aliged w/ the upper edge of the filler opening or the MAX 0.8" (2cm) higher i. e. up to the mark on the float (refer also to the schematic diagramm, next to the cap)."

This morning i was looking to see if the coolant level was full and i needed to add a little to it. I went over a little so that the top of the level float was over the edge of the filler opening (~.25"). If i read the manual right i did not over fill it. I am reading this right (BOLD WORDS ABOVE)???

The coolant from the BMW dealer is green (yellow) coolant? I could see some dried green coolant on the threads of the cap and i read some info here.
