What's the lifespan of an X5 battery?

I have an '03 X5 4.4i I just purchased a few months ago. It seems now that the weather is colder here near Seattle, it's seems harder to start first thing in the morning. I turn the key and there seems to be a delay before it cranks - and the cranking seems a bit sluggish.

I don't know squat about batteries, and I'm wondering if my (presumed) factory original battery is wearing out? I don't know if this is normal X5 behavior on a frosty 30F morning, or signs of a potential future problem. What I most want to avoid is a day when I turn the key and get nothing back from the X.

Anyone have anything to offer about this?

Thanks,
Dave

Ok. And was this something the dealer has to do, (~80 miles from me), or can it be smartly done by a good local shop?

I think I would use a voltage meter to check the voltage on the battery before I change anything !!!

My battery had to be changed after 4 years.
The voltage can be checked in the instrument cluster by keeping the "Check Control" pressed until you see "Test 01".
Then go to "Test 09" and press the odometer.
To unlock all the tests you'll have to add up the numbers of your vehicle's "serial number" which in found in test 01 and activate that number by repeatedly pressing the odometer until the correct number is displayed and then press the "Check Control".
A search on this will probably give you a better explanation of how to do it...
My old battery showed 10.something, the new one stays at 12.0 with lights on, engine off.

It's a good measure to replace your battery every four or five years. Batteries have been known to last longer but it is just small savings to keep it until it dies. And when it dies, it usually is at a very inopportune time, like a dark and wet night. X5 batteries aren't the easiest to change, if your handy it can be done in less than a hour. Good luck

voltage is not a positive indicator

a battery can still have 12V but have no cranking power, i.e. able to produce amperage.
get a new battery and avoid getting stranded.

Dave,
Get a new one. Remove the spare tire, remove the four bolts (10mm) that holds the airpump or blank dome, remove the long bolt that holds the battery in, disconnect the neg terminal 1st, remove the pos terminal , disconnect the vent hose.... remove the battery.......replace in rev order..... time = 20 mins

Dave
