Just got word back from the dealer. Service rep says it was a combination of the age of the car along with the cold weather..They cleaned as much as they could out of the engine bay but unfortunately alot of it leaked all the way on to the exterior of the exhaust.. He says it will have to be driven for the smokey smell to dissipate...He said my car had leaked (sprayed) about a quart and a half of oil...But my engine oil light didn't turn on...I believe him, but I'm not happy about my dash not lighting up telling me something was wrong...Guys and gals if you are in a cold weather area and have relatively high mileage (75k or more) get this checked out before its too late..

I have 129K miles on mine and I hope to get at least 200K. Yes, I spent a lot on it last year because it was brake, tune-up, O2 and CV boot replacement time, and I still need to get my catalytic converters replaced, but a few repairs here and there are a lot cheaper than buying a new vehicle (or at least one I will be happy with).

Only one I am really dreading is tranny replacement.

Dawg...I see your point as well...I'm torn..I want to keep it..I love my X and with all the new mods and upgrades we can do, it will keep it looking new. I'm just worried about reliability..I can't have something like this happen again...

Tough call. Why not get a third party warranty? The $ per month might be worth the peace of mind or put some money aside each month in case something happens.

is this your first incident? if it is let me tell you some more about it. i dont drive the x, my wife does. one more morning. the x didn't want to start, wife late for work, boom $400 battery + something else. 2 weeks later, the door didn't open, then boom again door actuator + carrier $600. 1 month later 2 cv boots torn $600. this winter, thermostat housing (temp needle pegged to red) $200, water pump died $400. the when the wife was driving on I-495 alternator quits, everything shut down she was lucky the traffic was light she could pull over and get it towed again $600 down the drain. this morning washer fluid level warning light came on, checked, broken and leaking tank. what else? i think my love for the x has died long time ago. so sad but true. good luck.

Yeah i've been thinking about the third party warranty..I have the money to pay for these repairs, thats not the real issue..The real issue was that the X was unreliable at a time I needed it the most...when i was headed to work in 8 degree weather..thats what i mean when i say i can't have this happen again. Its the reliability of the X at higher miles (90k) that bothers me. I mean it shoud be reliable right?

I don't feel that way yet. We have 79K on our 2002 3.0i and the repairs we've done (outside of brakes, etc) has been a left side half-shaft (CV joint) a new battery about 1 year ago and a Final Stage Resistor. Other than that, right now, I noticed the passenger door lock actuator is getting lazy, maybe time for a replacement. No window regulator problems of any kind - I must be really lucky! Anyway, we're keeping ours for now but I will keep in mind your cold weather, high mileage message - it's now 9 degrees outside and it's going to be a cold commute in the morning.

WOW Timingly post! I had this problem this morning...

I went out to start my 02 3.0 x5 in 5 degree weather (I live in MA) Last week I had the car into the dealer to have all 4 doors repaired as I was finding they would not relatch when the weather was freezing. So I get into my car and the drivers door does the exact same thing. THAT ends up being the least of my worries!

I start the car to warm it up go into the house to get my daughter ready to bring to daycare. I leave the car in the driveway running for maybe 10 minutes tops. I get Bella into the car I get into the drivers seat (holding my door shut) and look at my temp gauge. IT IS PINNED TO THE RED. NO other lights are on just the temp gauge pegged. I immediately shut the car off. Now its 6am and I am questioning if I saw what I thought I saw so I restart the car. When I restart it the temp gauge is now below the 12'oclock (towards the cool side) I think Huh maybe I was seeing things. I drive (still holding my door closed) to the daycare about 4 miles from my house. I get my daughter into the daycare and leave the car running outside the daycare for about 2 minutes. I get back in and the temp gauge is normal 12 oclock. I have NO heat coming out of the vents this whole time. I start driving home and the car is very very sluggish almost no power. The temp gauge now drops back to the half point of the cool side of the gauge. I drive 4 miles home, park and call the dealer.
They are going to take the car in tomorrow. It is still THANK GOD covered under CPO. This all happened this morning. I just went out to have a look under the car and under the hood. No leaks under the car but I did notice a odd wetspot around the oil filler cap and when I took it off the inside looks like a coffee milkshake, I decided to pull the dipstick and that looks like a milkshake too. Any ideas what might be wrong with my car?

Thanks!

AAA just came to get the X5 and bring it to the dealer

I called my service rep at the dealer and he suggested I have the car towed into the dealership. One thing I did not mention was when I was in the car not only was their no heat coming out of the vents the whole interior smelled of burnt oil.
