X5 transmission manufacturer?

Who makes the transmissions in X5s? Specifically the 3.0L. My father has an 03 3.0L that shifts great. His other 05 4.4L does not shift so good. I think the 4.4L uses ZF. What about the 3.0L.

thanks

I am positive that GM made the 3.0i tranny. Look at the official BMW spec documents that are on the main page.

In the 6-cylinder models, usually it has a GM auto tranny (I belive the 3.0i has the GM tranny)....

The V8 models have ZF auto tranny.

Their European division is considerably different/better. I can honestly say the 3.0i transmission is.....PERFECT. The shift program couldnt be any better, and has been exremely reliable and solid.

My 02 3.0 sticker shows the transmission coming from France. There is a ZF factory in France, I don't believe GM produces transmissions in France.

Interesting the concern over GM transmissions being in the X5 3.0 (and lots of other BMWs).

As I understand it, the GM 5 speed has BMW controls in it. Most of the transmission issues that I have read about over the past years have more to do with control programs, electronics, etc, than with the mechanics of the transmission itself. I would be more worried about the BMW content than the GM content. Same likely applies to the ZF transmissions in the 4.4/4.6/4.8, as they will have BMW electronics and ZF mechanicals.
