Yes - there's a Bluetooth retrofit kit for most BMWs, including the X5. (I've personally done a BT retro on my 2001 M3 and it was very straightforward).
The X5 retro puts the electronics in the trunk, and there's a piece of harness that runs to the front of the car down the driver's side - probably along the sill with a branch that goes under the driver's seat to the centre console and another branch for the A-pillar. The kit includes a microphone and connectors for the roof, pre-cradle electronics and BT aerial for the centre console, and the wiring blocks to 'plug and play' at the rear. The job should take a careful person a few hours, and the module can be coded by the dealer afterwards if you want (it will work without coding - my M3 kit still isn't coded).
Check your phone suits the BMW before you go ahead. My experience of lots of phones is that the Nokia Series 40 devices are pretty good (forum.nokia.com -> device specifications), Series 60 Nokias are difficult and don't transfer phonebook, Sony Ericssons are usually all good, as are later Motorolas, etc.
Good luck!

Why get things so over-complicated and over-priced with the bluetooth retrofit kit (you're looking at over $700 worth of hardware alone) when a simple solution exist for about $50 from most online stores => http://direct.motorola.com/ens/carkits/learn-T305.html. I just got one for my sister and must say that it performed pretty well for a tiny device. If you want to blast your conversation (or music) through your car speakers instead of the built-in speaker, then wait for the T505 => http://direct.motorola.com/ENS/T505/T505_Home.asp

BMW electronics are already so finicky that you're only asking for trouble with any retrofit.
