clunk on acceleration

I have an early 02 3.0 model, originally supplied in the UK then shipped to Malaysia, I've had the car 2 years, 70,000miles on the clock. The service history is only known for the time I've had the care, no stamps in the owners book other than the predelivery inspection in Germany. I've chnaged engine oil, brake pads and bulbs etc. Car runs very well.

Just recently she has developed a clunk un heavey acceleration especially if on an incline, it clunks 2 or three times when moving off then is fine. If you release the brake and move off without putting your foot down there is no clunk. Noise appears to be comming from the left side rear. I've looked underneath and only found a split gaiter on the front left drive shaft wear it meets the wheel.

Probably transmission oil has not been changed in a while.

Would appreciate any pointers to avoid being ripped off by local mechanics.

Thanks.

A common problem for creaking/clunking noises at the rear are the rear subframe bushes, have a look at this thread: http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e53-forum/...oise-back.html
