CV Boot DIY?
Has anyone out there done a diy CV boot replacement? The outer front boots are starting to throw grease at 75,000 miles on my 2001 X5 3.0. The BMW repair CD I have does not go into detail on this repair, and Bentley hasn't come out with an X5 book.
I enjoy doing my own work on my vehicles (vast experience on my '95 540i) as long as I have a proper guide. Are there any links I could be steered to? |

:welcome: to X5world.
So far I haven't seen a DIY on this, but would be very interested in hosting an article on the topic here on the site if you decide to tackle it. If you do so, please also take some pictures to aid others. The only thing I have right now is this brief description of the CV's themselves - http://www.xoutpost.com/articles.php?...ticle&artid=41

For whatever its worth, my being the author of the CV Joint article seems to have been lost in the article shuffle.

Any idea for the cost to replace a CV boot? Need mine replace after a long trip of 1200 miles highway driving. BTW, I got 500+ miles for 1 tank of gas. It has to be a record. I am impress.

So no one has done this job? The boots are relatively cheap....

30 bucks a boot and yet it is an $800 job. I ordered the maint disks today on EBay. Last time I did this job it was on an 84 Excort L....think it might be different?

I had a cracked outer boot on my 01, and I was going to tackle that DIY but I decided to try to get MaxCare Warranty to pay for it and lucky for me, they paid for it to be done at the stealer. Kinda glad I didn't fool around with it. There is not enough Orange Lava Soap in my house to wash that much grease off. If you wear gloves, you're a pansy!
Parts came to $31.50, labor was $275. Don't forget that the bearings need to be looked at when you discover a cracked boot. JV

So that is $275 for the side? That still should only be $620 ish....
How does the Stealer come up with $820?
