CPO/Dealer Problems...NEED ADVISE PLEASE

I bought a 2005 X5 last January from a BMW dealer in RI. They told me that the vehicle had not been CPOed so I asked why and could they. Of course they could, so I paid the additional 1500. Every time I brought this vehicle in for troubles, I was being wacked with diagnostic fees, and they never find the problems or tell me its not covered. After 4mths of owning the vehicle a warning light came on for the front brakes that needed to be replaced, after fighting with them that I only put 4,000 miles on the vehicle, why am I responsible for $1600 brake job already? Now my vehicle is in the shop for a 45k inspection (63,000k on the vehicle) and an internal engine problem. Diagnostic fees to find out if it is warranty? I started to dig...nothing makes sense.

After some digging, I find out the the vehicle was CPOed on 11/28/08 2 months before I purchased it. Did I pay for CPO twice??? and...Does this warranty a refund for a brake service that I had to pay for? there was a difference of some 300 miles between the CPO process and my purchase date. Anyone have advise??

A diagnostic fee is normal, it is so you don't end up having them spend time on your vehicle finding out what is wrong with it, and then for you to take it somewhere else to get it fixed. Any reputable shop will have it, not just dealers, and it is usually waved if you have the vehicle repaired there.

You didn't say what is wrong with them but brakes are a wearable item, so CPO or not, it is your responsibility. If it is pads and/or rotors, do it yourself to save a bunch of $$$.

As far as CPO, you'll have to sort it out with the dealer and/or find out if the vehicle was indeed a CPO vehicle when you bought it. Dealing with these headaches is why I don't like CPOs and prefer 3rd party warranties, so I can take my vehicle where I chose and not where I am told.

When the CPO inspection was done, the front brakes had the minimum requirement of 5mm the rear were 7mm. Certification requires replacement if less than 5mm. So, keeping that in mind, I purchased the vehicle 2 months later and 250 miles later, also keeping in mind that they told me it was not CPOed! The brakes who have no question dropped below the minimum of 5mm but, they never inspected the vehicle on the date that I purchased it.

After speaking with BMW USA about these issues, they agree to open up a case and look into these issues. They said they would be back in touch with me within 5-7 business days. Hopefully, I can finally get an honest answer.

Demand your $1500 dollars back or take them to court. I bought my X5 right now, and low and behold they added $599 that shouldnt be there.. they gave me my money back.

So, the brakes passed inspection when the vehicle was CPO'd and there was therefore no need to replace them. They did not have to re-inspect the vehicle when you purchased it, unless you negotiated it and had it written in the purchase contract. They can't possibly have an inspection performed for every tire kicker that walks their lot.

Not trying to argue with you, just saying that by your post, it seems that the dealership did what they were supposed to do under the program. If it were me, I'd do the brakes myself so that I can put some quality pads instead of some cheapies they may throw on because you irritated them.

Now for paying for the CPO, ask for a refund since it seems that the vehicle was already CPO'd. Then, find another dealer to work with if you don't like this one.

Couple wonderments: if the car was originally CPO'd, I'm with the OP as to why that dlr took his $1500 for a "re-CPO"? A 45k miles "inspection"? What exactly is that? Dlr induced? Seems pretty low miles for Insp ll. That "diagnostic" fee is in the CPO language, but some dlrs don't bang the owner for every "look".

Seems that dlr is taking some advantage and everything, based on the OP's post, is not consumer friendly...as for brakes, they aren't covered by anything except orig. maintenance or extended maintenance, (not Warranty or CPO), but they may have been given the "car wash inspection" during the "first" or subsequent "paid for" 2nd CPO...
pretty weird. I would be pizzed too, I think.

A car is either CPO or not. It sounds like they charged you for something like a pre-purchase inspection. As for fees usually when I bring mine in it is $50 each time. I am dealing with an engine problem right now and I have only paid the fee once despite having gone there 4 times for it. Is this Newport or Inskip? I have had good dealings with Inskip. I purchased my X from a dealer in Massachusetts and I bring it to Inskip for the better service I get.

You should have gotten official CPO paperwork that states when the CPO expires, etc. Contact BMW NA to have them tell you. It should be in their system. If you didn't want to pay for brakes and wear items then you should have bought the extended maintenance. I agree with Motordavid, they are ripping you off, go somewhere else.
