Considering purchasing a used X5?

I ended up giving $31,500 for it. They were asking $32,995. I could've haggled a bit more I believe, but I was tired of shopping around.

The headlight lens covers were a little fogged, so I negotiated

1. A professional to polish the lens to a "new look", and if not happy, then
2. Replace both headlights w/ new lenses

And I made him put it down in writing. LoL I'm taking it into the dealer tomorrow to have the headlight work done, and get the steering volume controls fixed.

I ended up financing about 11K, and got the 2.9% BMW financing since it was a 2004+ CPO vehicle. So, I ended up w/ a pretty sweet "no brainer" deal (I believe anyway).

Hopefully no one will post that they purchased an identical one for < $30K.

I also looked at an identical one at a local chevy dealer (also w/ 42.5K miles on it), and they were asking $29,900 with no warranty whatsoever.
They attempted to sell me their GM Warranty ($3750) but I new better.

Evidently, they were actually upside down on that car. They showed me the invoice where they purchased it at the auction, and they paid $31K and change. Guess that's why they've been sitting on that X5 for over a year.

It sounds like you got an ok deal considering you purchased from a BMW dealer. I got really lucky and found my 3.0 at a Lexus dealer. I paid only $29,500 and that was on 10/10/06 w/ 25k miles, xenon, pano, rear climate, sirius, heated front seats, and best of all - it still had 2 years/3 months on the factory warranty. FLAWLESS condition. Asking price was $32,900 - I think they broke even(since I paid the trade-in price) It was a great deal but I got lucky to find it - just 3 months prior, I almost paid $5k more for the exact same X5 and mileage.

Great deal on the financing and nice to hear you were prudent by purchasing pre-owned(CPO) and only financing 11k.

Btw, BMW factory warranties are excellent - you'd be surprised at what it will cover. Don't hesitate to mention anything that is mechanically or cosmectically wrong with your X5. You might be surprised what it will cover. BMW recently replaced the interior fabric on the front pillars that hold up the roof. Here's a link to my recent post re: the BMW warranty.

That was a good deal, and I too have found that you can purchase trade vehicles from dealers at excellent deals, especially if the vehicle doesn't match the clientele that shops at the dealer. I guess they figure they'd rather move it, than sit on it for too long.

I purchased the King Ranch (Super Crew, 4WD, castano leater, fully loaded), which was just totaled, 4.5 years ago from a Mitsubishi dealership for $21K. It had 38K miles on it, and was barely a year old, and the original sticker listed it for $37.5K. They were asking $28K, and I totally low-balled them. I couldn't believe they accepted. They just wanted to get rid of it.

The cool part is that 4.5 years later (w/ 112,000 miles on it), I was able to get $17,300 retail for it from the insurance company. So, it basically cost me about $820/year to drive.

On another note, just dropped the X5 off at United BMW this morning for the lens work, and they gave me a sweet Lexus IS for a loaner. I didn't realize how fast they were (never paid that much attention to them since they were small). It has a paddle shifter on the steering column, and man do they work well. They were very responsive, and it was very natural to use. I already miss my X5 though, and it's only been 4 hours!

As far as the clunky doors go, I do realize they are nice and heavy. I think 'clunky' is a bad word to describe them, since it has a cheap connotation to it. They don't sound cheap, just different. It wouldn't suprise me if BMW designs their door lock mechanisms to 1.) Increase chassis ridigity when the doors are shut and 2.) Improve side impact crashworthiness. If they were doing this, then you would need some beefy door lock mechanisms, which would probably give a more rigid, mechanical feel that most other "whoosy" designs. I'll have to study them when I get the X5 back (because I'm a geek like that).

I haven't driven the Lexus IS but I'm sure it's awesome. My dealer always provides me with a BMW 3 series - man, they are so quick and response - I love using the steptronic - I'll probably kill myself if I owned one - I tend to drive really fast and like to "test it" around sharp curves.

I know...I missed my X5 in the beginning but now like having the loaner for a brief change.
