howling X5

I have a 2002 4.4, and above 70 MPH there is sometimes a howling noise that comes from the front of the vehicle. I cannot tell if it's the very front or not. It's associated with air flow/wind speed. It is not always there. When it occurs, it is quite annoying because it is loud! Looking through the threads, nobody else has described a problem like this. Any suggestions?

Can you describe the area of noise a little better? Is the noise coming from the front end (bumper area) or the front windshield?

If the noise is coming from the windshield area, it could be a wiper blade or windshield molding.

The noise seems like it's right in the middle of the engine compartment.

Howling noise - the windshield

Just to update this post. My sound is a howl as opposed to a whistle.
Using the assistance of a local, private shop it was discovered to be the windshield in the area where everybody else has had problems - in the vicinity of the review mirror.

probably the windshield molding. check if it's cracked. if it is, it might create the space for resonance while driving at certain speed.
