What is the model year of your E?

I know this being an X5 forum and all so i expect some grief for the following comments I am going to make.

My 2004 4.4i X5 Sport has done only 26k miles, and I have had it since 22k miles. It has been a massive dissappointment and has failed to impress me in any way bar its accelleration and top speed (had 138mph up). I bought it as I had a3.0i with manual transmission and it was an SE. It was a pleasure to own, so I bought the 4.4i car thinking it will be even better as its a sport.

How wrong was I? The extra mass over the front end (V8 weights more than in line 6) and I think there is a massive difference between the 2. 2ndly, my car has servo tronic which gives the steering more resistance @ speed and less @ town speed. Nice idea in theory, but it makes any level of performance driving difficult. My old car didn't have this, and it kept up with much more sporty cars on twisty roads. In the 4.4i car I can't go taunting Porsche Boxsters like I could in lesser powered car.

In short I think it was a massive waste of money, and a mistake to buy it.

My old man got an E class as a rental, and said he thought it was exceptionally good to drive (and despite being a 220cdi) no slower down a twisty road than his Porsche Cayenne S (a car I have driven that IMO comprehensively lifts the on road 4x4 SUV game on a notch on from the X5).

I loved my old X5, thought it was a fantastic car, and can't seem to say the same about this car.

I am aware of the E class amd merc reliability. I found a 2005 diesel model for sale, and any feedback on the car would be much appreciated (and has been)

thats very strange, I can keep up with most of those cars on twisty roads with my 2006 4.4 sport... maybe you dont have sport package?

V8 is shorter so its shoved back further than you can with the I6. you don't have 'more' weight over the front wheels.

There is still more mass (by 100-200kg) extra in the front of the car and the suspension settings (correct me if I am wrong) are different to that of the 3.0i car.

I (and a UK journalist) have noted that the 3.0i car is sweeter to drive than the V8. the argument goes for the 645i vs the 630i, the 630i is lighter and better to drive due the relative lack of mass of the L6 to the V8.

My X5 4.4i is a sport model, it has the 19 inch rims, the black headlining, and was sold as a sport. My old 3.0i was a SE, and lacked the sport suspension that my current car has.

is there a dealer fix to remove the viarable power assistance, so it has the same resistance, no matter how fast or slow you go. That would go a long way to improving the drivability of the car.

Yeah, you got some nerve Buster!!

I did indeed like the E quite much, but it just wasn't for me. Every time I got out of it, or was walking to it, I didn't feel the same way I do when I walk to, or get out of, my X....

Buying a used E will yield problems like those listed in this thread:
http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e53-forum/...e-repairs.html

I still think a lease on a new E will cost less in the end. If you can't afford that , you might be better off looking at other cars (not german).

No grief from me and your opinion matters around here but i have to say there must be some major differences in your X and my 2005 4.4 cause i don't have any trouble keeping up with anyone. As far as steering goes just the other night i was zipping around cars like they were going out of style. But then again i don't have the sport package and i may not have the "servo tronic". But i can understand if you were expecting something else.

Was your 3,0 pre facelift car ?, If yes then there is one major difference Pre facelift cars have permanent 4x4 giving 60% on the back and 40% on front. With facelift BMW introduced Xdrive whitch will shift whitch par of wheels is geting more power, so the car can br 80%front 20%back, that can make your beemer feal like any other frontwheel drive car (non sporty)turn of DSC and give it a go mutch more fun then 3.0
